Working Girl: The Storyline

This story follows the adventures of secretary Tess McGill, as she strives to climb the ladder of success. Her efforts to get out of the secretarial pool have been stifled; her superiors can’t see past her secretary role to realize that she is also an intelligent person, capable of being a broker.

When her new boss (Katherine Parker) is injured on vacation, Tess presents one of her ideas to another company as if she was an account executive, not a secretary. Under her new guise, Tess teams up with an investment banker, Jack Trainer, to bring her idea to fruition.

While working on the deal, Tess and Jack fall in love. Just when the deal seems to be a ’lock’, Tess’s boss comes home and reveals Tess’s true position in the company. Humiliated and disgraced, Tess leaves the big meeting, nearly losing her lover.

In the final moments, Jack supports Tess to regain their influence and make the deal work. Tess is recognized as an intelligent person with potential. She’s hired into the entry-level position she had desired and moves in with the banker.
